Galway firm Cellnutrition Health hopes honeybee mix could be sting in tail for Covid


 

 

An enzyme produced by honeybees to protect their colonies is being tested by an Galway-based biotechnology company and two universities to see if it could be effective against Covid-19.

Cellnutrition Health plans to work with National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway and Trinity College Dublin on trials that will involve combining the bees’ enzyme with marine plasma in an effort to create a solution that could both prevent infection and treat those already infected.

Declan Clarke, the company’s head of innovation, who holds an MSc in marine science, said that the combination of the two natural materials had the potential to work as both a natural vaccine and immunotherapy.
