Last evening, I went to the movies with my partner to watch the "Poor Things" by Yorgos Lanthimos.
We loved it.
The humour is kind of dark, kind of unconventional but the message to the audience has many levels and dimensions.
What it sprung to my mind, is this:
1. how the parents want to control the thoughts and the feelings of their children,
2. how the society views the position of women within it and
3. how primitive we are when we think that this film is a film with sexual scenes beyond, bordering to porn.
During the film, I almost thought... hang on, what about the upcoming referendum in Ireland (article 41.2) in relation to the societal position of women?
The film starting in black and white and then turning to colour when Bella left the house to discover the world, what a great idea.
How naive was she when she went out to the world but how quickly she has a metamorphosis...
The cinematography, the costumes, the story, the performances of Willem Daffoe, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, all outstanding !
I would rate "Poor things" amongst the top 10 films I have ever watched.
A must watch film!
