our mobile phones and some environmental issues

You may have got a new iphone from Santa but what is going to happen to your old one?

Here is some insight.

One tonne of iPhones would deliver 300 times more gold than a tonne of gold ore and 6.5 times more silver than a tonne of silver ore

Our smart phones are full of precious metals and we would need to consider not to change phones with the frequency we do now (i.e. about 11 months we get a new phone).

Apart from the huge environmental issues, the point that needs to be considered is how these metals are recovered by children.

So, educating our children on these issues can be a great New Year Resolution.

And, please, watch the film "Don't look up" under the prism of this post.

Mercury, Gold and the food chain

Illegal gold mining has transformed forested land into sand and ponds.Credit: Brett Gundlock for Nature

In Latin America, especially in Peru, they are thousands of illegal gold miners who use mercury to extract the gold from the river waters. Mercury absorbs the gold and in this way, they manage to get pure gold from waters.

However, the fate of this mercury is interesting, it comes into contact with the skin of the miners and also it pollutes the river. From the water, it passes to food and enters the food chain. It's exactly the same case as Minamata, Japan and the Minamata disease.

The illegal gold ends into scrap units where it "becomes" legal and then it is traded to US, Canada etc.

In this way, the illegal Latin American gold becomes laptops, smartphones, jewellery and also State Gold.

According to Nature,

"researchers want to understand how much mercury miners left behind, and how it is moving through the ecosystem. On a sunny June day in La Pampa, the CINCIA team explored the site in preparation for research that will look for mercury contamination in the air, water and soil, as well as birds, fish and other aquatic life. At the first stop, environmental chemist Claudia Vega parted with the group and walked down to the shore of a small pond. Two rusty fuel drums were partially buried in the bank".

Netflix documentary

Netflix's documentary on Dirty Gold is apocalyptic.

It shows how illegal gold is related to mafia, drugs, prostitution and environmental catastrophe.

In Vitro Anti‐Atherogenic Properties of N‐Heterocyclic Carbene Aurate(I) Compounds

Kristof vanhecke

First published: 01 November 2018

Abstract

The anti‐atherogenic (anti‐inflammatory) properties of various aurate(I) salts, of the general formula [NHC·H][AuCl2] (NHC = N‐heterocyclic carbene) have been investigated. The aurates are easily synthesized and obtained in analytically pure form. In addition, the biological activity of these compounds against atheromatosis via in vitro inhibition of platelet‐activating factor (PAF) induced platelet aggregation was probed. All complexes were found to possess anti‐aggregatory properties in vitro with [IPr*·H][AuCl2] 6 being the most potent inhibitor of PAF in micromolar concentration. Based on our findings, we conclude that these simply assembled aurates are a very promising class of PAF‐inhibitors and anti‐inflammatory drugs.

In this paper, we have collaborated with the team of Prof S.P. Nolan in Gent to study the antithrombotic properties of Au-complexes.

Special thanks are due to my ex-PhD-student and now a post-doctoral researcher in Gent, Dr Eleni Sioriki!
