The Ceuta tragedy was remarkable in its scope and volume, but the conditions surrounding it were not. Both in Europe and around the world, migrants are increasingly being weaponised as a political tool, even as they uphold the infrastructures and economies that form the backbone of daily life and health.
Our research project, entitled FOODCIRCUITS, traces the food sold across Europe and the US, in order to more deeply understand the role and experiences of migrant workers. One branch of the project focuses on Spain’s globally important citrus supply chains, and highlights how migrants are hidden from view in transnational systems of citrus production, transportation, and consumption.
Our research traces the (often contradictory) movement of people and produce throughout the globe, as well as the policies that govern movement, legality, and human and labour rights. By conducting original long-term in situ fieldwork, we are able to add much-needed perspective and context to current debates on migration and surrounding controversies.
Extensive research has shown that farmworkers across the globe are disproportionately exposed to dangerous working conditions. Farmworkers who work under informal or irregular status face compounding health risks that lead to even greater exposure to injury and death.
