Brexit...the domino effect

Politicians and Scientists have never been good friends...
Politicians hate Science and Scientists rather dislike Politicians...
However, this trend needs to change very quickly if we all wish to minimize the negative impact that Brexit is going to have to Academia in UK, in EU, in the whole word.

Student status, funding, research grants, fees, visas, border controls...all these elements will create such a strong domino effect to the functioning of British Universities and by implication to Irish...

Most importantly though, Brexit has already triggered far-right voices across EU and the sentiment of FEAR.

I think that we, as Academics, we need to unite and pressure Irish and UK governments to move forward and give Scottish and Northern Irish Unis the degrees of freedom (as we call them in Physical Chemistry) to continue participating in EU and research calls.

I am sure it is  going to be a long "transition” period but the impact of Brexit to young people and students needs to be communicated out there and I think that our role is to try to trigger this process.

That’s why we have a huge role to play as Teachers and Educators and Researchers…as people who are involved in the creation of knowledge and ...jobs!
