Why don’t we grow our own food?

This is an interesting article on Sunday Times today:

Why don’t we grow our own food?

and here are some thoughts of mine stemmed from this article.

The main points that we need to refocus in Irish Academia and Irish food industry are these:

1. train new people/scientists on how to produce high quality food; these courses do not need to be Uni degrees but short courses for all ages and backgrounds. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to grow food!

2. establish initiatives to inform/train the general public to eat more seasonally and more healthy

3. support the local companies by changing our attitude that the cheapest food can do the job! Cheap food means corporation food grown artificially and having traveled many miles. We need to start labeling the food sold in the SM with food miles! In order to grow an environmental mentality for the Public.

It's a complicated problem and needs the collaboration of many players in a synergistic way! But only benefits can be ripped from such an initiative!

open or close ended questions?

While preparing coursework for Semester 1 at UL, this is the dilemma of the day: open ended or close ended questions? I would go for a mix...
The focal point this year at FT4447 [Food Quality and Safety, Hazards, HACCP, ISO9001 and ISO22000: Food Quality ] is going to be two recent food scandals in EU:

1. horse meat and bute and

2. eggs and fipronil

Repeating the same/similar mistakes is not a good sign for the food industry in EU.
Any lessons learned this time?
Doubtful...

we are what we eat

We are what we eat and animals are what they eat!

So, it is not surprising that

Over the festive season, let's remember that food is the best medicine!

Merry Christmas !
