Special Issue "From Farm to Fork: Balancing the Needs for Sustainable Food Production and Food for Health Promotion"

A special issue of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050). This special issue belongs to the section "Sustainable Food".

Deadline for manuscript submissions: 15 March 2021.

Dear Colleagues,

The current and future sustainability of humanity is intrinsically linked to the environmental and biophysical conditions on our planet. There is a widespread belief that these conditions are greatly compromised by anthropogenic activity and that, unless action is taken, irreversible change will be unavoidable. Alongside these challenges is a growing human population and the need for sufficient and nutritional food. Although recent international initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and associated 17 Sustainable Development Goals recognize these challenges significant information gaps remain. In particular, there is an ever-growing need to balance the interdependencies and conflicts between economic, social and environmental systems so that sustainability across local and global scales and overall food security can be realized.

This special issue will address these issues and seeks contributions from colleagues interested in sustainable food production from economic, social and environmental perspectives as well as health promotion. Contributions which address synergies and conflicts between these issues are especially welcome. This special issue aims to publish high quality research papers and reviews that will be of interest to scientists, policy makers, educators and stakeholders across the full spectrum of farm to fork for sustainable food production and health promotion.

Kind Regards,

Dr. Ken Byrne

not vitamins again!

Being an Asscociate Editor for a special issue can be a joy, well, most of the times.
Being able to read first novel work on covid and inflammation, it's a joy!
Sometimes, though, the MS is a repetition of the literature with no novelty, no rigor, no new information. Lots of groups out there talk about vitamins and covid.

Ok, guys, we got the message.

Writing about which vitamins and nutraceuticals will stop covid without addressing the underlying mechanisms is not good Science. Is it?

Special Issue "Cardio-Protective Properties of Marine Natural Products"

Special Issue "Cardio-Protective Properties of Marine Natural Products"

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Several risk factors can initiate unfavorable processes linked to chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis, and CVD.
Marine derived natural products are potential sources for bioactive compounds, nutraceutical supplements, and drugs against inflammation-related chronic disorders, including atherosclerosis and CVD.

The evaluation of the benefits of marine natural products in all stages of atherosclerosis and CVD is of great importance, starting from their effects on the early stages of inflammation-related endothelial dysfunction; the recruitment of platelets, monocytes, and other leukocytes subtypes; and the onset and development of atherosclerotic plaque, until the final stages of the disease, including plaque rupture, atherothrombosis, and major cardiac events.

The aim of this Special Issue is to promote research in the field and to highlight the importance of natural products derived from several marine sources and related by-products, as inhibitors of these mechanisms towards cardio-protection.

Work describing the isolation, identification, and structural elucidation of marine derived natural products for the prevention and therapy of atherosclerosis and CVD will also be included. In addition, research on pharmacological characterization; nutri-omics (proteomics, glycomics, and lipidomics) related to bioactivities; and drug discovery and development from marine derived natural products, including formulation and clinical trials, are also welcomed. Finally, relative reviews and meta-analysis articles in the field are also welcome in this Special Issue.

Special Issue "Lipids, Health, and Diseases: The Interplay"

Special Issue "Lipids, Health, and Diseases: The Interplay"

A special issue of Diseases (ISSN 2079-9721).

Deadline for manuscript submissions: 31 December 2020.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Lipids are an incredibly diverse group of organic compounds that are structurally and biochemically involved in many physiological and cellular processes. They act as messengers in inflammation and immunity and are crucial in apoptosis, autophagy, and cell division. Over the last few decades, research has demonstrated that the role of lipids in health and diseases is of major importance and requires further research to advance therapeutics. The purpose of this Special Issue is to present current research that tackles the role of lipids in disease development and/or treatment. Current challenges to treat diseases such as cancer, neurological diseases, and cardiovascular diseases involve potent lipid mediators including eicosanoids and platelet-activating factors or changes of cellular lipid compositions. With the advances in ‘omics’ technologies and research, there is potential to discover novel lipid biomarkers and lipid mediators with pro-resolving effects, such as resolvins and protectins, and design new treatments.
This Special Issue will provide an open access opportunity to publish research work and review articles related to recent advances in understanding the role of lipids in health and disease and will hopefully present new molecular insights for developing potential therapeutic treatments as well as better patient diagnostic and disease prevention strategies.

Fish and Inflammation

(my latest article in Aquafeed) (March 2018)

by Ioannis Zabetakis

We are what we eat. Our food is also what it eats.

In other words, if fish are fed better aquafeeds, then we can improve the nutritional value of the final fish product, maximise the added value of the final produce and expand nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications of fish, fish products and marine oils.

Working towards the improvement of the nutritional value of aquafeeds and fish, we would need to focus on the bioactivities of fish components against inflammation.

Fish have a great positive impact on all chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Linking fish consumption to CVDs was first established through the seven-country study and today we know that fish components have strong cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.

The Journal Fishes published by MDPI is going to publish a special issue titled“Fish and Inflammation”.
In this Special Issue, we would like to present the latest research on fish consumption and its impact on inflammation-related chronic diseases in humans, e.g., CVDs. In vitro and ex vivo studies are equally welcome.

We would be pleased to solicit manuscripts pertaining to original research, mini and full reviews, short communications, as well as perspectives, which address any aspect of fish, CVDs and inflammation.

Submissions are invited that include, but are not limited to: Fish diet and its impact on the nutritional value of fish; Fish intake and development of CVDs; Specific fish components (e.g., polar lipids, omega-3 fatty acids) and their anti-inflammatory properties; Bioactive compounds from the seafood chain.
