What about New Year's Resolutions?
I am tired of this blah-blah that we are going to quit smoking, reduce drinking, running 5km every day etc etc.
For this Year, my one and only New Year Resolution is this: to reduce my carbon footprint by choosing food with fewer "food miles".
Food miles is about the distance that your food travelled to get to your kitchen.
That journey – the distance between where a food produce is grown to where it’s eaten – is what we mean when we talk about ‘food miles’.
Two days ago, I went to the super market. I have to admit here that I love shopping at Dunnes. Because it's Irish and because it offers excellent variety of quality foods.
On the shelves, you could find grapes from Peru and strawberries from Egypt. I opted for some Irish apples.
Using this food miles calculator,
these grapes, travelling from the capital, Lima to the capital Dublin, have travelled approximately6121 miles (9848km), as the crow flies.
This is the easiest way to reduce food miles: go for seasonal foods and look at the label: avoid foods that have traveled far, go for local instead.
